What Is Crypto?

One engine, many crowds.

The crypto fear and greed index measures the emotional state of the cryptocurrency market, the global, always-open marketplace where Bitcoin and thousands of smaller tokens trade around the clock, on a 0 to 100 scale, from Extreme Fear to Extreme Greed. The market is usually described with a single mood: risk-on or risk-off, greedy or fearful. Our data says that picture is half right. Hour by hour, sentiment across the major tokens reprices at the same moment, one emotional engine firing across everything at once. But the crowds it fires through are not the same crowd, and the differences between them are where the information lives. That is why CFGI measures the market twice over: one composite score for the whole market, updated every 15 minutes, and a separate score for every asset inside it.

The CFGI read: On 5 February 2026 the CFGI market index closed at 12, the most fearful daily reading in its records since tracking began in March 2022. The same twelve months added a 15, the second-lowest close ever, and a 16 that matched FTX collapse week (November 2022) for joint third, three of the four most fearful readings CFGI has ever measured printed in the year to June 2026, pushing the Luna unwind (17, May 2022) down to fifth.

Crypto Fear and Greed Index History: June 2025 to June 2026

The composite's year was a record book of fear. Its worst single day was a 28-point fall on 25 August 2025, and its best a 27-point rebound on 13 October 2025, two days after the market-wide cascade. In that cascade of 10 and 11 October the composite itself dipped only to 21, plain Fear, while six of the fifteen per-coin indexes printed Extreme Fear beneath it, the first demonstration of the year that the average can stay calm while individual crowds break. The capitulation proper came on 5 February 2026, the all-time low of 12, and the year closed with a final act: a three-day Extreme Fear streak from 4 to 6 June 2026 that logged 15 and then 16, the second-lowest close ever and a tie with FTX week for third.

The euphoric side of the ledger is thinner, and one honest caveat explains part of it: the composite's 1d series has a 74-day logging gap from 11 June to 23 August 2025, so the mid-July euphoria that the per-token panel recorded in full sits outside the composite's record. Within the recorded year, the high came on 3 October 2025, stopping just short of the Extreme Greed line, the score rounds to 80, and the composite never closed in Extreme Greed across its 291 recorded days, even as individual crowds banked weeks above the line. For scale, the most euphoric reading in CFGI's four years of records remains 88, set on 28 February 2024.

The crypto fear and greed index is most useful exactly where averages fail: coin by coin.
