What Is Zcash?

The outlier.

Zcash is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency that lets users shield transaction details; its token is ZEC. Nothing on our index behaved like ZEC between June 2025 and June 2026, in sentiment or in price. It was the best-performing token in our top fifteen by an enormous margin, up 720% on the year from $52 to $427, in a market where almost everything else halved. Its reading on the CFGI Zcash fear and greed index matched the price: nearly the least synchronised with Bitcoin that we track, a 48% sentiment match, and by far the wildest, with daily sentiment swings a third larger than anything else in the top fifteen.

The CFGI read: Zcash printed the year's highest sentiment reading, 90, with its price at $140, a fifth of the $697 peak it reached seven weeks later, and rose 61% in the very window the rest of the market crashed, 8 to 11 October 2025. CFGI's per-asset measurement caught a 720% year that Bitcoin's mood never explained.

Zcash Fear and Greed Index History: June 2025 to June 2026

The run itself is the story. The price bottomed at $35 on 5 August 2025. By 3 October the score had printed the year's highest reading anywhere on our index, 90, with the price at $140, already a fourfold move. Then came the week that separated ZEC from the entire market: in the cascade of 8 to 11 October 2025, while all fourteen other tokens on this list fell between 8% and 28%, ZEC rose 61%. It went on to spend 28 days in Extreme Greed across October and November, part of 38 Extreme Greed days for the year against Bitcoin's 2, with an eight-day streak from 29 September to 6 October. The price peaked at $697 on 20 November 2025, seven weeks after the sentiment peak and nearly twentyfold above the August low. The ride was never smooth; the year's worst single sentiment day anywhere in our data was ZEC's 55-point fall on 14 October 2025, landed in the middle of its own rally.

Add it up and ZEC spent 133 days of the year in Greed or above, more than a third of it, while Bitcoin managed 88. Then, having ignored the market all year, ZEC did the one conventional thing in its record: it capitulated with the majors. The price fell 39% between 20 January and 5 February 2026, and on 5 February it bottomed at 16, the same day as Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB, XRP and Solana, with the price at $217.

ZEC ran its own bull market on its own calendar and only rejoined the crowd to panic. That is the standing proof of what this index is for: a single market-wide fear and greed number would have averaged the year's most extraordinary story out of existence. Measured asset by asset, it is unmissable.
