Walmart is one of the largest retailers in the world by revenue and, increasingly, not only a retailer: its US e-commerce operation now turns a profit, its Walmart Connect advertising arm and third-party marketplace carry the margin story, and John Furner took over as chief executive at the start of February 2026 after Doug McMillon's retirement. It is also the closest thing the market has to a live reading on how ordinary households are spending. On the CFGI Walmart fear and greed index the score doubles as a running poll of the American consumer.
The CFGI read: Walmart's six-day run of Extreme Greed began on 28 November 2025, the Friday after Thanksgiving, and held until 5 December. The 40-point single-day jump that set it up, from 33 to 73, came on 20 November 2025. Whatever else this crowd was unsure about, it made up its mind about Christmas early and loudly. The window high, 85 out of 100 on 6 February 2026 at $131.18, then arrived the day after the broadest wave of stock Extreme Fear of the year, when 34 of 246 stocks sat in the deepest zone. Walmart went the other way.

The low was a late spring affair. On 2 June 2026 the score bottomed at 17 out of 100 with the shares at $113.06, inside a nine-session run in Fear or worse from 21 May to 3 June, and on a day when 107 of the 245 stocks scored were in Fear or worse. That was general, not personal. The lone Extreme Fear day of that stretch, 26 May 2026, is one of only three Walmart has printed in 273 sessions, which leaves it 130th of the stocks we track on that table, squarely mid-pack.
The overall shape favours optimism. Walmart closed 108 sessions in Greed or better against 62 in Fear or worse and averaged 54 out of 100. The share price rose 11.7% from $97.87 to $109.29, with a low of $94.40 on 11 July 2025 and a high of $134.20 on 19 May 2026, a fortnight before the sentiment floor. That sequence matters: the price topped first, and the mood broke afterwards.
It finishes the window at 34, in Fear, the same number it crashed to on 18 February 2026 when the score dropped 38 points in one session, from 72 to 34. A retail crowd reads the receipts before it reads the results, which is why on the full crypto and stock Fear and Greed Index Walmart is one of the few names whose sentiment line is worth watching for reasons that have nothing to do with the share price.
