SAP is the German software company that runs the back office of a large share of corporate Europe and a good deal of corporate everywhere else. Founded in 1972 by five former IBM engineers, it sells enterprise resource planning software, with S/4HANA at the centre of it, alongside procurement, human resources and supply chain products, and it has spent the past decade moving that installed base from licences on company servers to cloud subscriptions. By market value it is one of the largest software companies in Europe.
