What Is Alibaba Group Holding Limited?

The discounted empire.

Alibaba is the company global markets use to price their feelings about China itself. Founded in Hangzhou in 1999 by Jack Ma, it grew from a bare apartment marketplace into the backbone of Chinese online commerce, running Taobao and Tmall for consumers, a vast logistics network and one of Asia's largest cloud platforms. Its New York listing has spent a decade as the rope in a tug-of-war between believers in Chinese tech and everyone pricing in regulation and geopolitics. That argument never settles, it only reprices, and sentiment is where the repricing shows first.

The CFGI read: Alibaba joined the index on 10 July 2026 in outright Greed at 70 out of 100, and spent its first eleven scored days working that optimism off. By 24 July the score had slid to 35 and Fear, its lowest reading so far, while the price finished the window up just 0.2%. The mood travelled 35 points; the price barely travelled at all. For this stock, sentiment is where the argument happens.

Alibaba Group Holding Limited Fear and Greed Index History

Q3 2026 breakdown. The table below updates daily.

The shape of the slide matters. The price ran from $112.13 on debut day to a high of $120.47 on 20 July with the crowd holding between Neutral and Greed, then the mood cracked: a 13 point drop on 23 July, from 54 to 41, followed by the fall to 35 a day later with the price back at $112.40. Nothing in the wider board forced it. On 24 July only 81 of the stocks we track sat in Fear or worse and just 2 in Extreme Fear, so this was Alibaba's own crowd losing its nerve, one thread of the full crypto and stock Fear and Greed Index turning red while most of the picture stayed calm.

Eleven days on the index since 10 July 2026 is a sketch, not a portrait, but the sketch already has character: 6 days in Neutral, 4 in Greed, 1 in Fear, an average of 56, and a crowd that priced its doubts faster than the tape did. The 12 point jump on 15 July, from 57 to 69, shows the other side of the same reflex. Both directions arrive quickly here.
